Holiday Health Reset: Preparing for a Balanced New Year!

The holiday season is officially here! The Christmas tree is up, and Thanksgiving leftovers are long gone. Now, it’s a two-week dash to Christmas. Eek! It’s exciting, a little chaotic, and let’s be honest—it’s tempting to let all the indulgence roll right into the new year. If that’s what you choose, no judgement here!

But what if this year looked a little different?

Here is another option you could choose. Instead of riding the indulgence roller coaster of sugar crashes and sluggish mornings, the other option could allow you to savor the season with energy, clarity and balance.

This option involves making small, intentional choices now – like prioritizing nourishing meals, moving your body, and getting quality rest. It doesn’t mean saying no to every indulgence. We all like to enjoy the season and the special treats that come with it. It simply means we focus on joy over excess and health over hibernation. In other words, indulgence within reason and moving our bodies instead of hibernating.

Reflect on the Season

This is my absolute favorite time of year to do some introspection on what is working well for me and what I need to change, add or remove. I like to take the holiday season to quietly assess as I think about my new year goals. I also keep a journey throughout the year which is helpful in my self-awareness exercise as a first step toward change. Where do I feel out of balance? What do I want more of? What can or should I let go of?

Rebalance Your Body

Let’s face it, you will indulge at some level. You can balance this by including simple, nourishing meals and staying hydrated. Think soups, salads, and whole foods. Hydrate with water and herbal tea. Less or no alcohol is great!

Include light, enjoyable activities like yoga, stretching and walking. Movement also boosts energy and mood!

Refocus Your Mind

Gratitude is always a win. Being mindful is also helpful. This could include short meditations and/or breathing exercises to regain mental clarity.

Setting intentions is powerful. Begin each day with no more than three things you plan to accomplish. These are things that align with your personal values. Setting more than 3 intentions can become overwhelming and cause you not to complete any. Start with the things most important to you.

Reclaim Restful Sleep

Read last week’s blog about sleep and the holiday season. I won’t repeat it here but don’t forget how important your rest is. Not only sleep but personal boundaries too. Saying no when necessary and safeguarding time for self-care.

Rekindle Connection

Relationships and meaningful connections are a huge key to longevity. You are the expert on what this looks like in your life. I plan to be more intentional about inviting friends to my home for game nights in the new year.

Conclusion

It’s time to start thinking about the new year and what you want life to look like for you! It’s a great time to brainstorm any changes you desire to make.

I’m currently working on a workshop called How to Set the Foundation for a Healthier, Happier You in 2025.  Stay tuned for more information!

In love and health,
