Love Your Body: Self-Care through Movement

Do you love your body? Do you appreciate how it carries you and keeps you alive? I sure hope so! Our bodies are a fine work of art. Truly a masterpiece! Have you considered how your beating heart pumps blood through all your vital organs, including your brain and all your extremities? That in itself is a miraculous feat! Have you considered how your body is able to heal from the slightest scratch to a more significant injury? Our bodies are so smart! The body knows exactly where to send the extra help when needed!

I don’t know about you, but I want my body to continue doing what it does best! I am motivated to take excellent care of my body and give it everything it needs. If you had a car that you knew had to last the rest of your life, would you take good care of it? Make sure it got regular maintenance? You body is the same! It is the only one you have and there’s no trading it in for a newer model when it gets old and stops functioning like it used to.

However, just like the car, regular ongoing care of your body will help it to stay younger longer and stay mobile throughout your life. Keeping your body tuned is important for aging gracefully!

Just to be clear, I’m not the kind of girl striving to look like I’m 20 when I’m 80. I don’t think that is even possible. Aging is a privilege not everyone gets to experience. I’m also not a botox or plastic surgery kind of gal. If you are, no judgment here! My outlook is a natural one. Instead of fighting aging, I choose to do my very best to age gracefully. Instead of spending money on artificial ways to look younger, I prioritize healthy habits and necessary equipment to help me do so. That leads me to exercise!

Why Exercise?

There are SO MANY reasons! Oh my goodness. Let me list just a few!

  1. Exercise releases serotonin in your brain that makes you feel amazing! Serotonin is a natural neuro-transmitter and hormone that:
    1. Boosts mood; and
    1. Helps you sleep better among other things.
    1. Who needs antidepressants when you can get a better one naturally!
  2. Boosts energy levels
  3. Strengthens bones (think osteoporosis & osteopenia prevention)
  4. Reduces risk of chronic disease.

There are no downsides to moving your body AND your body was created to move. Your body wants to move. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you choose not to move your body, you will pay a hefty consequence as you age.

According to the Mayo Clinic, as you age and choose not to exercise, you will lose strength, endurance, and flexibility. This will affect your coordination and balance and leave you at greater risk for falls.

My Latest Investment!

Earlier I said, I prioritize healthy habits and necessary equipment. Historically, I have struggled with getting enough exercise during the winter season. This season, we had a very nice fall and mild winter up until now so I was still walking outside but I realized this wouldn’t last so after much research and contemplation, I made a major purchase. I bought a Peloton bike! I noodled over it for a long time to be certain, and I made my purchase through the manufacturer (not Amazon or Costco) because I got a better deal with white glove delivery and a 30 day money- back guarantee. If I don’t like it, they would come and pick it up. The reason that was important to me is because the bike weighs 140 lbs and I have it in my yoga studio on the 2nd floor (what used to be a guest bedroom!)

My Peloton bike is a GAME CHANGER! I absolutely LOVE it and it is FUN! The app is amazing and although it comes at an additional monthly expense, it is worth it. I use it for bike workouts plus weights, yoga, barre, dance cardio and it even has meditation on it. This piece of equipment and the app has changed how I winter!

I share my experience to encourage you to find what works for YOU! We are all motivated differently. I do prefer to be outdoors and have some challenging hiking plans this year, and this is helping to get me ready. What do you enjoy?

The best exercise is the one you will do and enjoy! If you enjoy it, you’ll be consistent.

Let’s Reframe the Word “Exercise”

Think of movement as essential self-care. It is a form of self-respect.

If you struggle with a chronic condition such as autoimmune, you may suffer with fatigue, stiffness, pain and general lack of motivation. I am sorry for you. I have been there too. However, gentle and consistent movement can improve energy and mobility! This goes back to a previous blog post I wrote about having a growth mindset. You CAN improve your suffering by giving your body what it needs. It may feel easier in the short term not to move or experience pain but ask yourself, “is this really what’s best long term?” Talk to your doctor!

I went to Gentle Yoga this morning (which I love) and thought of you! I hope each of you is able to move your body and take good care. If you need some coaching, I am available. I’m also a certified personal trainer with many certifications. I can create a workout designed for you! Book a call with me!

Keep moving and if you’re not, let’s get you moving! No excuses! Move for your future self!

In love and health,

Terri
