Silent Nights: How to Prioritize Rest During the Busy Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is over and we are full on into the Christmas season! This is a busy time of year for many and this year is unique given the shorter than normal time between the holidays. This week we are talking about making sleep and rest a priority always – including this extra-busy season.

The holidays can disrupt our routines. There are more social events to attend, gifts to plan for, parties to plan and host and a number of other things. How do we fit all that into our lives without sacrificing sleep? Well, it’s tempting to do so but I implore you not to. Have you considered giving up something else or doing less of the holiday hustle?  Prioritizing rest can leave you with more energy and joy for the season celebrations!

Why Sleep Matters During the Holidays

The impact of poor sleep increases stress and anxiety during an already busy time. Lack of adequate sleep weakens your immune system. Nobody wants to get sick during the holidays! Fatigue reduces your ability to fully enjoy the season.

Prioritizing rest results in better mood, focus and energy for family, friends and festivities. It also improves your health and resilience to stress.

Common Holiday Sleep Disruptors

  • Late-Night Holiday Preparations.  Wrapping gifts, decorating, or shopping online late into the night.
  • Overindulging.  Effects of alcohol, caffeine, and rich holiday meals on sleep quality.
  • Busy Schedules.  Evening parties, travel, and balancing work with holiday obligations.
  • Screen Time Overload.  Watching Christmas movies, scrolling through deals, or holiday binge-watching.

Strategies to Protect Your Sleep During the Holidays

  1. Set Boundaries Around Sleep. Commit to a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even during the holidays.
  2. Build in time for unwinding after evening events.
  3. Create a Holiday-Friendly Wind-Down Routine. Add festive, relaxing activities like sipping herbal tea while enjoying twinkle lights or reading a holiday book.
  4. Use calming techniques like deep breathing or gratitude journaling to settle your mind.
  5. Be Mindful of What You Eat and Drink. Avoid caffeine and heavy meals late in the evening.
  6. Set the Scene for Restful Sleep. Add seasonal touches to your sleep sanctuary, like soft, warm bedding or gentle holiday-scented candles. Ensure your bedroom stays a tech-free zone despite the holiday bustle.

A Practical Guide to Balancing Festivities and Sleep

  • Plan Ahead. Prioritize tasks like gift shopping earlier in the day to avoid last-minute stress. Limit how many evening commitments you say “yes” to.
  • Naps are Your Friend. Take a quick power nap to recharge without compromising your night’s sleep.
  • Be Realistic. Accept that you may not do everything perfectly but can still enjoy the season by taking care of yourself.

Conclusion

Christmas is a time for giving but don’t forget to give to yourself by giving the gift of rest to yourself.  Trying to do too much is the enemy of rest and peace. Please remember to prioritize yourself and your health.
