It’s Thanksgiving week! I hope this is a joyful time for you. Let us all remember to “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
This week’s topic is a fun one related to your turkey bones! What?! Yes. I highly encourage you not to toss out the bones to your turkey. They have two great uses! After you use them to make delicious homemade turkey soup, use them AGAIN! This time to make homemade bone broth. I’m going to teach you how to do this via my kitchen video next week. For now, let’s talk about bone broth and its health benefits. What is it?
What is bone broth?
Bone broth is a nutrient-rich liquid made by simmering animal bones with water, vegetables, and often a splash of vinegar to help extract minerals and nutrients from the bones. It’s an age-old remedy with roots in many traditional cuisines worldwide, known for its comforting and nourishing qualities.
You can buy bone broth in liquid form. You can also buy it in powder form. As for me, I much prefer to make my own. I don’t trust the added ingredients in commercially prepared plus I like to save money and make it myself. It’s SO easy! It takes only a few minutes to throw it together, then a few hours to cook (unattended). I use my instant pot and let it pressure cook then naturally pressure release overnight. This makes the house smell wonderful. I’ll give you all the details in my video next week which I plan to record and make available to watch when convenient for you.
What Makes Bone Broth Special?
Bone broth is rich in nutrients! It is cooked longer to extract collagen, gelatin and minerals from the bones. It is thick and nutrient-dense. I like to keep a supply in the freezer and use it as stock when I make soup to give my soup an added nutrient boost. Here is a further breakdown of its special ingredients.
Collagen and Gelatin: Proteins that support skin, joint, and gut health.
Amino Acids: Glycine, proline, and glutamine, which help repair tissue and reduce inflammation.
Minerals: Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and trace elements important for overall health.
Easily digestible. Bone broth is gentle on the digestive system and ideal for individuals with gut sensitivity or autoimmune conditions.
Hydrating and healing. It’s high water content helps with hydration. The nutrients soothe and repair the gut lining, benefiting digestion and immune function.
Versatility. Can be consumed alone or incorporated into recipes like soups, sauces, and grains.
Accessible and Affordable. Homemade bone broth is cost-effective, using leftover bones and kitchen scraps.
Summary
Incorporating bone broth, whether chicken, pork or beef, into your diet can provide many important health benefits. Remember, bone broth should be consumed as part of a well-balanced diet that includes a variety of other nutrient-rich foods. It is not a magical cure-all, but rather a nourishing addition to support overall health and well-being.
Stay tuned for my kitchen video next week where I will show you EXACTLY how to make delicious and super easy bone broth and share my recipe! I’ll post the link next week.
In the meantime, have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving holiday!
In love and health,
Terri
