Walking for the Win!

Welcome to Spring! This is one of my favorite times of the year when my outdoor trees, shrubs and plants return to life. The grass is turning from its winter brown tones to green again and the days are getting warmer and longer too. People are getting out more and we see our neighbors again which is fun.

This time of year is a natural time to get outdoors and walk. It is pleasant and walking is simple, requiring no special equipment. It is low-impact so it’s gentle on your joints which is ideal for those managing autoimmune symptoms.

Walking also hits several of the 9 Pillars of Health.

  • Movement: Boosts cardiovascular fitness, lymph flow, and stamina.
  • Stress Reduction: Lowers stress hormones and boosts mood—walks are natural stress-relievers.
  • Spiritual Health: Great time for prayer, praise music, or quiet connection with God.
  • Community: Invite others to walk with you—builds community and accountability.
  • Outdoor Therapy: Soak in the beauty of creation and reconnect with God’s handiwork not to mention Vitamin D.

Walking can be done anytime or anywhere and doesn’t require a gym membership or any special clothing. It is accessible to anyone.

Short walks – even just 10 minutes, can improve your mood, circulation and mental clarity.

Start at your level and be consistent. Fresh air and sunshine are health bonuses that support your immune function and mental health.

You may want to pair your walks with a gratitude practice or perhaps your time alone to listen to a podcast or audiobook. Alternatively, walking with friend(s) is fun too. Mixing it up makes it interesting. Think of it as self-care. A date with yourself that is high priority.

Staying active throughout life is important for the aging process. Start small and build from there. The goal is consistency, not perfection.

Walking is a great way to prepare for bigger physical goals too, like summer hikes or travel.

Call to Action:

Taking care of yourself is not only a responsibility but also a pleasure. You GET to do kind things for yourself and the time spent is not selfish. In fact, it’s the opposite. Your older, future self will thank you for taking care of yourself and your loved ones will also be thankful. We maintain mobility and cognition through self-care and movement is a huge part of the equation.

Start today and make it enjoyable. The best movement is the one you’ll do again tomorrow!

In love and health,

Terri
